SHOVELER IDENTIFICATION

To aid identification we shall compare various significant parts of the Shoveler:-

OVERVIEW

Australian Shoveler.
A Blue/Grey head with a vertical White crescent in front of its eyes. It has a large Black bill with Chestnut and White flanks, dark and light mottled breast, dark back and rump with Blue/Grey and White wing coverts. The eyes are Yellow and the feet and legs are Orange.

Northern Shoveler.
An iridescent dark Green head, dark Yellow eyes, Black spatula shaped bill, White breast, Chestnut belly and flanks. The forewing feathers are pale Blue with a Green speculum and White feathers between the two. The legs and feet are Orange.

Red Shoveler.
A Cinnamon plumage with dark spots, the head and neck are Grey with Black spots on the crown, the eyes are a pale Bluish White and the large spatula shaped bill is Black. The wing has Blue coverts, a Green speculum and White underside. The lower back and rump are Black and the tail is Black with White outer feathers. The legs and feet are Yellow/Orange.

Did You Know?
Shovelers use their uniquely shaped bills to filter the water when feeding for crustaceans.
The female constructs the nest near water in high vegetation.
The shoveler is a dabbling duck.
